Hi, I’m Susan and I’m a volunteer Parent Mentor at The Door.

My role is to provide emotional support to my mentee. I mainly spend our time together finding out about their week, letting them tell me what’s been happening, how they feel about it and listening in a non-judgemental and empathetic way. However, I do challenge them where appropriate, we are here to help them grow after all!

In turn, I’m wonderfully supported by Shona my team leader. She helps me to stay positive about what I’m doing. At times, providing support can be very challenging and draining, but she gives me perspective to see the bigger picture which I can pass on to my mentee.

Mentoring usually takes place face-to-face: I tend to go on walks but others go for coffee or play sports. During the lockdown, we have gone to video or phone. This works well enough but I do miss being able to give my mentee a hug at the end of the session.

One of the biggest challenges this year has been coping with my own emotions during the lockdown. but the team have been wonderful in supporting me which, in turn, has enabled me to continue supporting my mentee.

It’s a brilliant way to give back. I really value the opportunity to help someone help themselves and to witness the way in which their resilience grows. It can be emotionally demanding but it’s really satisfying to see the distance travelled over the weeks and months. It’s great working as part of such a committed team and witnessing the difference it makes to so many lives.

Thank you for letting me share in this achievement!
