At The Door we have a long tradition of opening opportunities for young people as volunteers, on work experience or through training or apprenticeship opportunities.

So as well as providing exciting and inspiring safe spaces for young people, and journeying with them through challenges and difficulties, The Door can also help young people in their career progress.

Chelsea has been on a volunteering placement as part of The Door's Youthwork team over the last six months. Anne caught up with her to see how she is getting on:

Hi Chelsea, thanks for talking to us!

That’s ok!

So, what are you studying at the moment?

I’m doing Health and Social Care, level 2, at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.

What made you choose The Door for your placement?

I knew The Door well – I used to come to the Stroud Centre when I was younger, and my gran was a volunteer in The Door Shop, so I knew that it was a good place and I wanted to be a part of it.

What have you been involved in on placement?

I’ve been part of the aDOORables team, which is a parent and toddler group for young parents, so I’ve had some experience with little children as well as youthwork. Now that’s finished I’ve been with the Stroud Youthwork Team helping in sessions. Oh, and I helped out with some events and at Goodwill which was fun.

How do you feel you’ve fitted into the team?

Really well. Everyone’s been really friendly and welcoming.

What’s the best thing about being on placement at The Door?

Seeing lots of young people coming to the centre, and knowing that I can help.

And the worst?

Hehe, there isn’t anything really!

Can you share a story that typifies The Door?

I used to come as a kid and if I ever came in down there would always be someone to talk to and always be put me in a better, happier mood. I see that happening to others week after week and its great I can help do that for them.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to study mental health and psychology and then do a counselling course to become a counsellor. I just want to help people.

Thanks Chelsea, we know you’re going to go far!

Hehe, I hope so. Thanks!!
