As the summer holidays draw to a close, we have seen a flood of new referrals for our services. Holidays are often a difficult time for many families and relationships do get strained, producing needs for both our Young People services and our Family Services.
Luckily a group of new mentors from our July training course are chomping at the bit to get started with one already meeting with their first mentee and others just about to meet their mentees for the first time. As these referrals keep coming , so does the need for mentors. In light of this we have set the date for an autumn course starting on Monday 24th October, and are now actively seeking new volunteers.
If you know anyone who you think would make a great mentor please point them in the direction of The Door. As one of our mentors said recently; “Being a mentor is the single most rewarding thing I have ever done!”
Following on from the successes of our youthwork in Cam, Dursley and Wotton we have seen an increasing number of referrals coming from outside of Stroud, so we are particularly looking for volunteers who live or can work in these wider areas.
Lesson of the Month: Sometimes just being there is doing more than we could possibly know!
In a recent review of a mentee, where the team felt the relationship was not going anywhere and was not being of any use to the young person in question, the review was filled by a fear that the mentoring would stop, saying how much he was getting out of it and how he really would like to continue it. “I would not be as happy as I am now if it was not for my mentor!”
