Many of the people that come to The Door for support do so because something outside their control has had a deep impact on their life – young people like Tom, a regular at one of our youth clubs:

“There’s no easy way to say it. We all knew that the day was coming when my dad would pass away. It just seemed to come along sooner than we thought it would. He’d been ill for a very long time so I guess living alongside that unknown had become my version of ‘normal’.

When he got worse I knew that I needed someone to talk to. My family had enough of their own stuff to deal with, so I asked the youthworkers at The Door. They said I could have a mentor and helped me fill in the forms.

It’s been a difficult few months, but it’s been made easier having someone to talk to about how I’m feeling. Without my mentor I don’t think I’d have been able to stay in school to finish my exams.

I’ve had other professionals helping me too and The Door has made sure that we are all on the same page which has made life so much simpler. That hour or so a week has been just enough to help me process what’s been going on and keep moving forwards.

Now that I’m getting used to my new normal, I won’t be seeing my mentor for much longer. And that means that they can go an help
someone else like me. But I know that The Door is there if I need them which is a great comfort too.”
